The organization faced several major challenges in providing IT resources for high-throughput biomedical research, including providing high-performance computing capabilities that allow TGen’s scientists to analyze large volumes of complex data very quickly.

TGen needed a clustered computer system that could be used to solve highly complex and computationally intensive biomedical problems. After considering a number of cluster options, TGen and their strategic partners — Arizona State University and the International Genomics Consortium — selected the IBM System Cluster 1350. The solution was comprised of 512 IBM System x two-socket rack servers, for a total of 1,024 computing nodes, all running the Linux operating system.
